The Professor unveils his Academic 133+ XL Deck Box

Gamegenic Academic 133+ XL

After 39 YouTube videos where he has reviewed nearly every conceivable deck box possible, the famed Professor from the Tolarian Community College is getting into the business of game supplies. He unveiled his own creation, “The Academic” Deck Box, earlier this week.

As he explains, “After 8 years of reviewing Magic: The Gathering products and accessories on my YouTube channel Tolarian Community College, it’s time to bring my own deck box to the table, the box of my dreams. I feel the great weight of my supporters’ trust in me and I cannot deliver anything less than the very best. Therefore, I was very thorough in choosing the best partner for this endeavor.”

That partner is Gamegenic, a German company that offers a range of premium gaming accessories that include not only game boxes but also card sleeves, binders and more. It is owned by Asmodee, a games company.

The preview video gives us a good sense of what the Professor has come up with even if all details have not yet been announced. The name suggests that the Academic will hold up to 133 presumably double sleeved cards (around 160 single sleeved cards), more than enough for a Commander deck and tokens and possibly a few extra cards. It looks to be wide enough to comfortably also hold cards in toploaders.

The Academic comes with a fully detachable cover lid that can very conveniently be wrapped around the bottom and uses the Gamegenic magnetic nub system that the Professor has praised in the past to keep everything in place.

Inside, there is a large main card area where your deck will easily fit. A removable divider is easily pulled out when you want to put in a smaller case (something like the Gamegenic Squire100+ Convertible perhaps?).

There are also three trays, two of which slide out. The latter two each have a flap that lets you pull out cards or supplies without having to pull out the entire tray.

The Academic 133 XL will go on sale via a Kickstarter campaign starting March 15th. Pricing and full details, including specifications, have not been announced yet. The campaign promises different votings and a lot of surprises for fans and backers.

While I have more than a few deck boxes already, I’m definitely looking forward to finding out more about this one. In the meantime, let me know below if you’re interested in this new box or not.

Update: In his March 8th “Is It Worth It To Buy ‘The Academic’? | A Review Of The Professor’s Deck Box” YouTube video, the Professor announced that the Academic 133 XL will cost US$45.
