More Frazetta Secret Lair temptation

Let me start by saying that I have so far manage to resist the temptation to buy any of the Frank Frazetta Secret Lair cards. It has not always been easy but I have held strong – Probably for no other reason than the one I gave back when the cards were first revealed: I don’t have a deck where these cards would easily go.

So, what do Wizards of the Coast do? You guessed it! They’ve announced another Frazetta Secret Lair of course! It’s part of this year’s Summer Superdrop releasing on June 9th. Five new cards to be tempted by:

Of the five, the two below are my favourites in terms of art. Chained in particular (on the Deadly Dispute card) is another of Frazetta’s signature pieces. If I recall correctly, it graced one of the Conan books that I read as a kid.

Much like last time, definitely some cool art but no cards that immediately scream out to be added into a deck that I currently have. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate the first Frazetta set even more – particularly now that Dark Confidant is Standard Legal. That card might have gone nicely into my Crime Pays deck.

Anyways, as of tonight, I’m holding strong on buying a Frazetta Secret Lair set. I’ll let you know if things change.

And in case you are interested in a mono-black deck focused around crimes, here is my Crime Pays deck:

Spider-Man and More: Upcoming Marvel Sets in Magic: The Gathering (And my thoughts)

We’ve known for nearly a year that Marvel superheroes and supervillains were coming to Magic: The Gathering. The partnership between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast was first announced on October 23rd 2023. While there has been sporadic information since then, this week, the taps started to open in a more meaningful way with two major announcements.

First up is a number of new Secret Lair sets collectively announced as the Marvel Superdrop. Five sets were announced, each around a specific superhero: Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, Storm, and Wolverine. Each of the sets features one superhero card (a legendary creature), and four spells. There are some great reprints, including a few pricey ones Commander’s Plate in the Iron Man set, Ice Storm in the Storm one, and The Ozolith in the Wolverine set.

For example, the Marvel’s Captain America set comes with the following:

One more – Here is what you’ll find in the Marvel’s Wolverine set:

Wizards has also revealed that the first Marvel set will be focused on Spider-Man. The release date is sometime in 2025. No word yet on exactly when but I’m wondering if it could come out in the summer around the same time as Core sets used to come out. Or could it be in the tail-end of the year, just in time for the holidays? Maybe we’ll find out at MagicCon: Las Vegas at the end of the month.

As you probably know by now, I’m not a fan of Universes Beyond (and don’t get me started on Secret Lair sets). It fundamentally feels weird to me to have a deck where the cards are so thematically different. I cannot see Wolverine lining up next to Ajani or Ruhan. It will always feel strange to me. Granted that Magic sets have ranged quite a bit in this space but they have almost always felt inter-connected into one larger world or universe, especially with Planeswalkers and the stories behind them.

I think that my fundamental issue is with slamming together disparate established universes. It harkens back to cross-overs in comics. Most of these, going as far back as when I was an avid collector, was just how forced some of these were. Anyone remember DC vs. Marvel in the 1990s where they went as far as blending characters (Dark Claw was a blend of Batman and Wolverine for example)? Or Aliens vs Predator or Star Trek and Green Lantern? Some worked but more were just painful in my opinion.

Talking to the boys yesterday as well as in the past, they don’t have the same hang up as I do. Christian actually pointed out something that really made sense: “People don’t like Universes Beyond until there is a set that they like.” And I will confess that Marvel coming to Magic does have me more excited than any other such set before. Count me in for Spider-Man!

Maybe we need a couple of new formats to address this. The first would be inclusive of Universes Beyond sets and the second would focus exclusively on cards not in Universes Beyond. The first would allow you to throw everything in while the second would provide an answer to the purists among us. There will still be sets that will invite debate. For example, where does The Lord of the Rings sets fit? It is one of those sets that thematically slots into Magic better than some other sets we have seen (eg, the recent Outlaws of Thunder Junction). I know that this will be something that will be discussed around our game table.

As always, I invite everyone to chime in with their thoughts.

Frazetta to make me succumb to Secret Lairs?

I’ve yet to purchase a Secret Lair Drop (although Noah has). As far as I’m concerned, most of the SLD offerings fall into that category of products that WOTC calls “not for everyone.” Most have been reprints of cards that can be purchased often for significantly less. If you purchase a Secret Lair, it is because the art or the theme of the cards appeals to you. And I’m completely fine with giving buyers different options at different price points. Mechanically unique cards are a different matter and not one for today!

It’s rare that I will splurge for a particular version of a card if I know that there is a cheaper version available. There have been exceptions for one reason or another (most often the art and a minimal price difference) but I’ve yet to be swayed by a particular version if the price is substantially higher (yes, the boys have called me cheap!).

The latest Secret Lair may change that though. The upcoming drop features art by Frank Frazetta. Five cards have been revealed so far courtesy of Gizmodo:

I first discovered Frank Frazetta through my love of Conan the Barbarian, John Carter of Mars and Tarzan books and comics.

My two favourite cards are the Midnight Reaper (Frazetta’s classic Death Dealer) and the Field Marshal. The Dark Ritual is pretty sweet as well. Okay, they are all awesome!

But here is the reality: I don’t have any decks currently using either of those cards. Am I really going to splurge on a Secret Lair and either put the cards into a binder and only look at them once in a while or build a deck around them? I could see myself building a Soldiers deck of some kind, especially in the current Standard format, but that’s a whole lot more cards to buy. Dark Ritual would be the easiest card to slot into a deck.

If cold and emotionless reason prevails and I don’t buy this Secret Lair, I will likely add one or two cards to my singles wish list and get them later (when that same reason does not remind me that I’m just doing it to bling out a deck).

Left-handed Magic cards

Have you ever sat across someone who looked to have trouble holding their cards or shuffling their decks? Did it ever occur to you that they might be a left-handed player playing with right-handed cards? While it may never have crossed my mind, it did occur to Wizards of the Coast and they have taken a first step to remedy this issue by introducing the very first left-handed Magic cards.

We believe this wrong has gone unrighted (unlefted?) for too long. No more will our players be forced to play with suboptimal right-handed cards. This is Magic as it was always intended, featuring five of the game’s coolest lefties.

The Finally! Left-Handed Magic Cards Secret Lair consists of 5 cards:

  • 1x Left-Handed Sisay, Weatherlight Captain
  • 1x Left-Handed Empress Galina
  • 1x Left-Handed Geralf’s Messenger
  • 1x Left-Handed Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh
  • 1x Left-Handed Garruk, Caller of Beasts

The cool part of about this April Fool’s prank is that it’s an actual real deal. While I am not a fan of Secret Lairs in general, I must give kudos to WOTC for finding a way to turn their joke into an actual product. How many times have we all chuckled at a good April Fool’s, patted ourselves on the back for not falling for it and simply moving on. In this case, you’ll be able to own the joke at the end of it all.

The Finally! Left-Han will be on sale from 9 a.m. PT April 11 to 9 a.m. May 9. For the usual US$29.99 for a non-foil set or US$39.99 for a traditional foil set.
